Running a business means you have to make tough decisions, often times quickly and under pressure. No one knows this feeling better than Carey Lohrenz she was the first female F-14 Tomcat pilot. And this morning at ACCA 2016, she got attendees revved up to handle any of the issues that come their way. And as contractors, you know issues can come from pretty much anywhere!
The first thing that she shared was that it only takes 75 – 80 percent of the information to take action. The caveat is you have to continue moving forward for 80 percent to be enough. So, don’t wait for the perfect moment, it will never come.
She pointed out that to be successful, your team must know what their purpose is and what the number one most important thing in the company is. She challenged attendees to ask their team what the most important thing in the company is. If people cannot not answer that with clarity, then you need to step up to be a leader.
She said a great attitude is key to winning. Not a, “Polly Anna” fake attitude, but the attitude of knowing where you want to go and the dedication to go after it.
She said, “If you lose sight? You lose the Fight!” So, you have to focus on what matters and you will win.
One of the most important things that you need to succeed is not be afraid to fail. Fear of failure is paralyzing and then opportunities are missed. So, don’t be afraid to go first.
One important point that she drove home the point that all great teams embody two qualities: Belief and Trust. You have to believe and trust that everyone is working towards the same goal.
She told everyone that the need to be tenacious, because tenacity is continuing on after the courage has worn off. When no obvious option works, find another way by focusing on the goal ahead and get rid of the impossible.
She wrapped things up telling attendees to flip the fear into something better. You must be brave, You must take risks. Nothing beats experience.
